Most Homes Can Take an EV Charger
The question is what has to change first — and that comes down to the switchboard, the cable run and how much spare capacity the property actually has.
Precision Electrical & Air installs home and commercial EV chargers across Brisbane. This page covers what determines the job, so you know what you are looking at before an electrician arrives.
The three things that decide the job:
- Your switchboard
- The parking location
- The cable route back to the board
Will My Switchboard Take an EV Charger?
That is the first thing checked, and it is the thing that most often decides the cost.
A dedicated EV charger is a continuous, high-draw load running for hours at a time. That is different from an appliance that cycles on and off.
Older switchboards, boards already close to capacity, and boards still carrying ceramic fuses or no RCD protection usually need work before a charger can be added. See our switchboard upgrades.

What Else Determines Your Install
Single Phase or Three Phase?
Single phase suits most homes and charges a typical EV overnight without difficulty. Three phase allows a faster charger, and it is worth considering if the property already has three phase available or if there is more than one EV in the household.
Three phase is not automatically better. It is better when the daily driving distance genuinely exceeds what an overnight single phase charge replaces, or when the property has other large loads competing for capacity.
What About Load Management?
A charger with load management monitors the property’s total draw and throttles itself when the house is using power elsewhere. On a property with limited spare capacity, that is often what makes the install possible without a supply upgrade.
Where Should the Charger Go?
Wherever the car parks, within reach of a practical cable route back to the board. A charger on the wall directly behind the switchboard is a short job; one at the far end of a detached garage or carport means a longer run, possibly underground — and that is where quotes start to separate.
An outdoor charger needs an enclosure rated for it, mounted where it is not taking direct water.
Home Chargers & Commercial Chargers
For a home, the work is a dedicated circuit, the charger itself, and whatever the board needs to support it.
For a business, there is more to decide before any cable goes in: how many bays, whether the chargers are for staff or customers, whether usage needs to be metered or billed, and what the site’s existing supply can carry.
What Makes an Install Compliant?
An EV charger is a fixed electrical installation and must be installed by a licensed electrician on a dedicated circuit with the correct protection. It is not a job for an extension lead or a general power outlet.
You should receive certification for the work — and if a switchboard upgrade forms part of the job, that is certified as well.

What Our Electrical Customers Are Saying
EV Charger Questions, Answered
01Can I just plug my EV into a normal power point?
A standard outlet will trickle charge, but it is slow and it was never designed for a continuous high draw over many hours. A dedicated circuit and a proper charger is the safe way to do it, and on most vehicles it is the difference between a full overnight charge and a partial one.
02Do I need a switchboard upgrade?
Sometimes. It depends on the age and condition of your board, how much spare capacity it has and what protection is already fitted. An older board, or one already running close to its limit, usually needs work first. It is checked before anything is quoted.
03How long does an EV charger installation take?
A straightforward home install with a short cable run and a board that needs no work is usually done in a day. A long or underground cable run, or a switchboard upgrade as part of the same job, extends that.
04Is three phase worth it for a home charger?
Only if you actually need the faster charge. For most households an overnight single phase charge replaces the day’s driving comfortably. Three phase earns its place with high daily distances, more than one EV, or a property with other large loads.
05Can you install a charger at a business with multiple bays?
Yes. Multiple bay installs need the site’s supply capacity assessed first, along with decisions about who the chargers are for and whether usage needs metering. Those answers shape the electrical design, so they come before the cable.
